5. How did you come up with the idea for your course?

We honestly saw a huge need in the market. Creative entrepreneurs were throwing money away (trying to discover their brand by hiring business after business), when we could help them discover their brand identity all on their own.

There is so much bad information out there about what branding truly is (and isn’t) and how to create an experience dream clients can’t help but love, share, and buy.

One of our goals was to create a holistic branding school. Something that wasn’t just focused on the brand, but on the owner of the brand. We didn’t want our students to cut any corners. We wanted them to dig deep and experience true freedom that comes from confidently owning you and your brand.

Which is why every student who goes through our program walks away with something tangible they’ve created but something intangible they’ve personally experienced. Our program truly transforms creative entrepreneurs from the inside out.

6. How did you build your email list?

#1: A strategic social media plan (using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)
#2: Through our other email lists (we have a main newsletter list and a mini‐classes list) #3: Private Facebook groups (communities we run or are a part of)
#4: Through our past clients + students

I also believe that the email list grew organically through raving fans sharing about it for us! A lot of our followers ended up tweeting about the 3‐part series, sending their friends our way, etc.

7. When did you start your business? Did you make money in another way before a course or was this your first revenue generator? 

 We started our business (Hey, Sweet Pea) in August 2011.

Before leaping into the realm of online teaching we ran a successful branding studio in Austin, TX. 3 years into our business, I ended up in the hospital with the West Nile virus, which then escalated into Viral and Bacterial Meningitis. We truly think of that experience as the turning point. When you’re in the hospital and your life/business seemingly falls apart, it makes you willing to do the scary thing! We finally admitted that our previous business model was killing us (physically, emotionally, etc.) and that we were ready to do whatever it took to stop trading dollars for hours.

So in January 2014, we launched our irresistibly priced online classes (Thriving on Instagram, Mastering Systems + Productivity, Leveraging Social Media, and Writing to Delight). We were hooked on teaching. But we still needed a flagship offering. Something that would give us the financial and physical freedom of which we dreamed.

Enter the amazing CAOC program.
In October 2014 we launched our first premium course, My Own Irresistible Brand, and have been happy dancing ever since.

8. How long did it take you to create your course from start to finish?

From the moment we started watching CAOC to the time our cart opened: 7 weeks.

I definitely don’t recommend our timeline. We’ll never try and pull something off like that again! We only slept a couple hours every night and lived on Redbull the entire time.

9. Did you face any big challenges (in creating, promoting, launching, anywhere along the journey)? Tell us about them and how did you overcome them?

We did everything ourselves (designing and coding the website, copywriting, filming, marketing, etc.). So we were pulling some killer hours to make everything a huge success in a very short period of time.

But then, while developing our website/student portal, we lost 4,000 lines of code.

There was a random internet glitch and the entire sales site (landing page, 3‐part series portal, and sales page) AND the student portal disappeared.

We had to recode everything in about 48 hours. That’s when we switched to buying cases of Redbull.

10. How did it feel to make that first sale?

True story: when the first sale came through we were asleep.

We had stayed up the entire night before putting the final touches on everything and crawled into bed an hour before the cart opened. 

But as soon as we woke up and saw the sales, you could FEEL the excitement in the air. We were buzzing the entire day. We honestly couldn’t wipe the smiles off our faces. There may have been a dance party. Some skipping through the house. And lots of silly bear hugging.

11. How has creating and selling your course changed your business/perspective? And/or your life?

It gave us financial freedom AND physical freedom! That’s the dream right?! Suddenly, we weren’t tied to our desks and could start truly living.

Now we travel full‐time (in a camper named Finn) and only have to work about 5 hours a week. Craziness. One year ago we were pulling 60+ hour weeks and were ready to give up. Now we work 5 hour weeks and adventure all day long.

Have there been any other ‘surprises’ that have resulted from launching your course? *
I think we were surprised about how little time the customer service for the program requires compared to our old business.

We used to work with 30‐40 clients at a time with each project lasting 3‐8 months. It took a full‐time team of 8 to even manage (and Scott and I were still pulling crazy additional hours).

Our first course welcomed in 50 students for a 6‐week time period and we only had to spend a couple of hours a week taking care of everyone. Because the course is so comprehensive and there’s a Facebook support group, there’s very little hands‐on customer service. Which means our inboxes stay pretty empty and we’re no longer tied to our laptops!

12. What’s next for you? 

After we launched our course, we went back and reworked our initial mini classes. These are now all systematized through Ontraport and they match the teaching/delivery style of our big course. A lot of students who take our mini classes will end up taking our course, so this was the perfect next step before we relaunch our course.

Soon we’ll be opening up enrollment for the second time! Our goal is to keep tweaking it and making it better and better. We’re already hard at work on updates to the launch sequence, marketing plan, student experience, etc.

After this next round, we’ll start experimenting with Evergreen funnels, webinars, etc.

13. What’s your advice to someone who is about to begin on their journey to create, promote & profit from online courses? And…finally, what would you say to someone who is interested in David’s Create Awesome Online Courses program
