Let’s not forget the printed book is a breakthrough handheld technology. Still hanging in there after 550 years. In dead-tree atoms or shiny new bits, there’s nothing quite like it since Gutenberg, and there’s no information technology likely to replace it anytime soon. Godin is wrong about Dickens, who serialized his novels in popular London magazines of the day. But he’s right about nearly everything else. I was a grad student in Ann Arbor and a loyal Borders customer just before they got bought by Kmart and launched a national retail tragedy of vaulting ambition. Pretending to carry everything in print. Cornering the market like mobsters. Wiping out local shops of genuine character. In the 1990s I produced a dozen or so business titles that got zero support from McGraw-Hill and smaller specialty publishers. Now to hear Godin put Amazon and ebooks and bookstores and the NYTimes bestseller list in proper perspective is music to my ears. There’s hope yet for the enterprising writer. There’s hope yet for the voracious reader. Let the author be the publisher and the reader be the marketer. How happy I’ll be to have all these new means at my disposal next time around. Poke that box.
