Today on The Rise To The Top: The #1 Show For Mediapreneurs: About 20-25 times a week I get an email asking about what I equipment I use to create The Rise To The Top. Here is the answer in today’s episode, the smarter, faster, cheaper equipment I use that you can use for your web show/podcast and changes I made from 2010 to 2011 and why.

I use RISE partner Wistia for video hosting because they rock. Check ’em out.

Audio Only Player

Equipment:

The Rise To The Top EquipmentHere’s what my philosophy has always been when it comes to equipment: Highest in quality, but simplest to use. Nothing would be worse than buying a bunch of stuff and realizing it takes some kind of tech genius to use it. Here is a run down of everything mentioned in this episode (FYI: affiliate links where applicable):

Recording and Editing Equipment:

Skype: Used for video and audio interviews.

Ecamm Call Recorder: Used to record video and audio interviews (MAC only).

Screenflow: Takes video of your screen and also has a cool picture-in-picture feature I use for introductions, ads and the above episode.

Macbook Pro/iMac: I’m an Apple guy for sure. I used to record on my Macbook Pro, now I do it on the desktop computer.

Rode Podcaster USB Dynamic Microphone: This is the microphone I switched to this year. Plugs right into your computer.

Rode PSM 1 Shockmount For Podcaster: The mount attaches to the microphone and basically keeps it stable and doesn’t ruin the recording if you accidentally bump the mic.

Rode PSA 1 Swivel Mount Studio Microphone Boom Arm: This is the arm that attaches to my desk and holds both the shockmount and the microphone. Looks super cool and is easy to use and keeps your desk clean.

External Harddrives/Backup: I use a variety of backup including Dropbox, Apple Time Machine and external harddrives. Nothing worse than losing a show.

Video Player, Audio Player, Syndication:

Wistia: On-site video player I use. Works with all devices, looks super sharp, great analytics.

Widget Realm/Devici: On site audio player (and audio download), also syndicator to things like Connected TV, iTunes, Roku, etc.

Feedblitz: This is what I use for email marketing. Feedblitz automatically sends shows to email subscribers and also allows me to send out blasts as well.

  • Hey David, nice list of products you use. Also SCHWEET that you’re a Mac fan. We need to stick together. But the real question is: Is this setup what you started out with?

    • David Siteman Garland

Kev – Definitely…Macs rock. In terms of where I started, definitely not. I try to do a post or show about this every year to go through updates which I talk about in the episode for sure.

      • I sent you an email for another question offline. I’m also connecting with you going forward as I watch what you’re doing. How long have you been on a Mac?

  • Do you use any additional lighting or is it all natural window light?  I know poor lighting on some shows is a major distraction.

Can you clarify what is required to “hardline” in Skype?  Not quite clear on that.

    • David Siteman Garland

      Amy –

      1. I have big, big windows facing me so that is what I use.

      2. Hardline meaning the Internet on my computer. As opposed to wireless, I plug it directly in.

      Hope that helps!

  • P.S. Brilliant and generous resource list and explanation David! 😉

  • I used to spend hours on iMovie, thanks for the Screenflow tip, will be doing from now on for my Skype i/v.
You just saved me some hours 🙂

    • David Siteman Garland

Happy to save you some time John!

  • David,
Thanks again for your inspiration.  Mac-fans unite!  I’ve published my second interview, each one is a little better.  ( http://cubedwellerfitness.com/2011/10/learn-fly-jump-training-interview-jacob-hiller/ )A new mic would be awesome!  Skype and ecamm is been great.  I’m still not sure what settings I should be using.  Any suggestions on the video/audio settings inside ecamm?  -Troy

    • David Siteman Garland

Troy – I’d recommend whipping them an email. They have GREAT support and are far better with things like settings than I am 🙂 You should find a support button somewhere on Ecamm.com

  • Alexa Hart

So helpful! No more Blip.tv? Wistia instead for hosting? You have inspired me to start a new project with video.

    • Alexa Hart

Also, a personal question – Does it ever get weird talking by yourself into the mic? You make it sound so natural like there is actually someone there in the room with you, but it’s probably just you who is there.

      • David Siteman Garland

Short answer: sort of. LOL. I prefer someone else. Sort of why Howard Stern got Robin at the very beginning..he didn’t want to talk to himself 🙂

    • David Siteman Garland

Ya Wistia is awesome and you control it. Blip.TV controls it if you put it on there.

  • Was introduced to your site by Brandon Yeager and loving it already, David.

Quick question: I have Screenflow, but never knew it had a picture-in-picture feature. As a matter of fact, just checked it out to make sure and couldn’t find it.

    Help!

    • David Siteman Garland

Ana – Great to hear that!

I’m definitely not the tech master but let me see if I can help. So I use the second-newest version. And basically if you click on screen flow click “configure recording” and then “record video from” (check the box) and then select your webcam 🙂 Hope that helps!

  • Jenn Lawlor

    David,

Great content and advice.  Thanks recommending a pretty simple set-up.

  • Positive Stocks

Hey David whats up bro-bro. OK. So I have been running interviews with public companies since 2000- Audio interviews..I know.I know. Old School..I actually still love my flip phone–o.k. the point. . Im def-moving into video..I am struggling to make myself look good..I know..I know.. the lighting is all wrong- tried to research this- perhaps you could fill me in on some tips– thanks d-
