  • Wow, this interview resonated with me for so many reasons.  I’ve had a similar path of doing lots– and lots! — of different things: sales, PR, political campaign work, photography, writing, purveyor of wine tastings, several stints at odd jobs just to pay the bills, and lots more besides.  And like James, I can now see how the dots connect, and I feel like everything was leading me to where I am now. I gotta say, it’s really good to see someone who came from a similar kind of done-lots-of-different-things background achieve this awesome level of success!

And kudos to you David, for your excellent site!  I’ve only recent discovered you (about 2-3 months ago), and now I visit every week to see what’s new. I absolutely love the in-depth questions you ask your interviewees, especially about how they got started and *exactly* what they did to achieve the next level of success.  That’s exactly the kind of stuff those of us just starting out with our own businesses need to know about!  : )

K – Welcome aboard! Glad you have a part of RISE nation. And I thought James story and message would definitely be something that resonated with folks. So glad you enjoyed it!

  • mikky

You asked great questions in this interview, especially that last one.
Thanks for asking q’s that us your audience want to know the answers to.
And thanks James for giving tips that we can use.

    • David Siteman Garland

Thanks Mikky. Now I have to go back and watch what I asked HAH!

  • Wil

    Awesome interview….very inspirational…

I hadn’t been to your site in a while… I like the new, improved version.

I saw the blub for the interview on Google+. I love your enthusiasm and Jame is a great example of following your bliss.

    Keep up the great work!

    • David Siteman Garland

Owen – Good to see you back! And thanks!

  • Great interview James and David.

I think sometimes we get caught up in believing that our path is supposed to be “perfect” and straight and narrow. But when we can let go of that and allow it to be whatever it will be by trusting that we’ll figure it out, that allows the greatest gifts of all to come TO us rather than us chasing after them out of desperation.

James is such a great example of that message.

    • David Siteman Garland

Definitely. And the successful people, like James, take action. I love the last 5 minutes when he talks about hanging out with the right peeps and being ok being at the bottom of the rung to learn.

  • Sniper420

inner world thing is all great but did he ever run successful business? Or talker not walking the talk. Sry I gotta be critical here.

    • David Siteman Garland

Sniper – I never have someone on who hasn’t. 🙂

  • Only halfway through, but had to comment…

‘How did you not talk yourself out of it?’
One of the best questions you’ve asked an interviewee. More than tactics, more than tips or tricks, that lone soul longing for a new life needs motivation as well as a way out of fear.A question like that–when the answer is taken to heart–can change lives.Awesome work.

    • David Siteman Garland

Thanks Jason. I agree. “how to” info is great, but I LOVE the inner stuff even more.

  • James seems like a dude I would want to hang out with. Not really like any of my friends but seems like an awesome guy!

    • David Siteman Garland

      LOL definitely an awesome guy

  • Matt Coffy

    Hey David,

Just another amazing interview, how in the world do you keep them getting better and better, every time?  You are asking such pointed questions.. thats why.   The last 5 minutes of the show is just pure gold.. if anybody does not watch this whole thing and not “get it” by now then watch the last few minutes and find your peeps.   Truth is, that James did one single thing that i think impressed me the most and is my takeaway…that is
he raised the standards of who he hung out with over time.

    • David Siteman Garland

Matt – Such good advice too and simple, yet not enough people do it. Thanks SO much for the kind words my man.

  • Great interview David and one that I really learnt a lot from. The idea to focus on creating relationships is one that needs to be constantly reminded when starting business.

    • David Siteman Garland

THE most overlooked part of business ESPECIALLY with those of us who focus on online business. For sure.
