  • Derek’s got some killer stuff and this interview holds some very great insight.

You guys do have some monster audio equipment going on there 🙂  Great job here David and Derek!

    • David Siteman Garland

Haha it is a party of pop filters and microphones 🙂

  • Stylish haircuts to both David and Derek (well, not exactly a haircut). Here are my questions for the gaps:

    1) When there are some USP candidates, would you suggest testing those USP by looking at reception feedback in paid traffic (i.e. ads) or guest posts?
    2) How do you submit guest post when you don’t have a website? (I’ve noticed a lot of sites want guest bloggers to have their own site, especially given the competition these days) By using the USP to entice the site owners that it would attract new readers and make new readers to stay subscribed to their sites?

    • David Siteman Garland

      My opinion:

      1. You could test by offering up guest posts on the topic. If nobody is interested at all, etc. might not be a great topic 🙂

      2. It is obviously better to have a site, but I know lots of examples who did it without especially starting very small and building up. At worst a one page site 🙂

  • Shelia

Great show! I admire both of you guys and found today’s episode very inspiring. Love the idea of holding off publishing to iTunes until you have a few shows. Also, really enjoyed his explaination of how he researched his niche. Thanks again.

    • David Siteman Garland

You rock Shelia. Definitely super useful and agree re: holding off on iTunes.

  • I was quite interested until the guy says “radio sounds cheap”. I guess this is the difference between someone who goes all out to use audio “masterclasses” to manipulate a sale, versus someone who wants to build a relationship using a trusted and respected medium of communication.

    • David Siteman Garland

Dave – Interesting. Different words definitely evict different emotions in people.

Love this interview. Some really good tips here. I like the advice of building anticipation for the first video but I think very few people who have big inspirations for a webshow have that type of network. The biggest barrier to publishing webshows, I’ve found, is people tweak their show forever without publishing. A proper USP in a blue ocean market will allow you to publish sooner without running the risk of losing people. I like the strategy of moving up the iTunes charts but for webshows don’t forget videos have shelf life well beyond the initial publish date. My first episode had 64 views in the first week. It now has 177,000. Just my $0.02

Great points, G and you should know after 500+ episodes of your show 🙂

  • thanks @derekhalpern:disqus I loved the Drafting technique because it’s a great way to leverage other peoples media contacts and get link backs from top news sites. Dudes thanks for adding another actionable strategy to my tool box. This is something I can actually use because I have a show. I borrowed the idea from @andrewwarner:disqus to create Action / Cheat Sheets (Summaries) of my interviews and now I am contacting bloggers with my target audience to give it to them as guest posts. Now with this Drafting technique I can go after the news media as well. Thanks @therisetothetop:disqus for this interview (<<<— Dude you ROCK BALLS!)
