Have you every thought about creating your own show for your business?

If you are looking to build trust, reputation and authority (as well as a super healthy business), there may not be a better opportunity than there is now to start your own show around your passion…audio or video.

Dumber, Slower, Expensive vs. Smarter, Faster, Cheaper

It used to be starting a show meant you had a zillions of dollars, somehow won a golden ticket from a traditional media source OR you were the zen master of technology. Now, you need is a great idea, drive, passion and a touch or two of your own personality. This “Internet thing” we all love has become an unbelievable resource of tools….that are easy to use. Blog hosting software like WordPress has revolutionized and simplified the process of creating a complicated website. And the list goes on….

Do you have to work your butt off to have a successful show? You bet you do. But now, the difference is instead of big money you can be successful with a big drive, creativity and hustle.

The Illusion Of Size

One of the biggest misconceptions about creating your own show is that you need to have MILLIONS (or multiple thousands) of viewers/watchers/listeners/community members to build a successful business around it.

I disagree. For one thing, the Internet allows you to “niche up” as opposed to mainstream media. Want to start a show for penguin lovers? There is a small, passionate market for that.

Media is one of the best forms of marketing. Having a show leads to more clients and customers and isn’t just limited to advertising and sponsorships for revenue. Sure, advertising and sponsorships takes a little bit more of an audience/community, but imagine if the RIGHT people watch your show and as a result know, like and trust you. Then, they go peek around and see what you have to offer. Perhaps it is consulting, a virtual product, a physical product, hiring you as a speaker, whatever. The numbers game gets flipped from mass to specific.

There are LOTS of ways to monetize online content

For example, say you are an attorney targeting new businesses. There is an opportunity there to create a show with advice and maybe even call-ins/tweet-ins, etc. with legal help for new business owners. If eight people watch it and six become clients over time, was it worth it? I bet most would answer a resoundingly huge YES!

This kicks off a fun series on media making for entrepreneurs. I’ll be talking to some of the best in the biz about becoming your own media source. Online magazines, online radio, online TV shows (I like the “shows” term a lot more than Podcasting…but that is just me) and many more. Folks that are living, breathing and succeeding (does that rhyme?) at it and have tips and advice for you as well. Plus, I’ll be joined by folks in the traditional media world talking about the digital shift and how their businesses are pivoting which will give you an inside glimpse of a few of the bigger boys and gals.
