But before you take the plunge, that nasty little shadow of self doubt lurks out from the depths of your mind and paralyzes you with questions like…

“Who the hell am I to start my own group?”

“What if I no one joins?”

“What if *gasp* no one posts and I’m stuck with a group full of LURKERS?!”

If this is starting to sound just a little too familiar, don’t sweat.

I totally get it.

In fact, I hmmm’d and hawww’d over the decision to start my own free group for about 6 months before pulling the trigger.

Seriously.

And now after building up TWO free groups with over 55,000 members combined (fo’ real), I can honestly say making the decision to create and build our free Facebook groups was monumental to the growth of our brand.

Which is why we wanted to create the be-all-end-all of free guides to help our fellow webpreneurs get set up and started with their own free Facebook groups for their business.

Because I’m tellin’ ya, if you do it right, a free group can transform and catapult your business in ways you’ve never imagined!

Which is exactly what we’re going to be diving into in this guide!

So brace yourself, because we’re getting down and dirty with all things Facebook group related.

From “how the heck do I grow my group?” to “alright, now how do I get them to speak up and engage in there?” to “how do I sell inside my group without sacrificing my community?”…

So let’s dive in…

What Is a Facebook Group?

Nearly 1/3 of the world’s population has a Facebook account.

Let that sink in for a moment.

*takes a little pause*

Wild, right?

Heck, I still remember creating my FB account back in 2006 and how quickly “just message me on Facebook” became a go-to saying of mine.

Fast-forward a few years and I started using it as a tool for our various businesses and a whooolllleee new world opened up.

And while Facebook’s initial mission used to be “To give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.” (uhhh mission accomplished!), they recently unveiled their updated vision, ultimately highlighting why soooo many of us love and use their platform…

“Facebook’s mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. People use Facebook to stay connected with friends and family, to discover what’s going on in the world, and to share and express what matters to them.”

See that little underline up there?

Yep! it’s all about community building, baby!

Which is where this free guide comes in…

You see, as I mentioned a few lines up, we have been running a free Facebook group for the Screw The Nine To Five brand now for 3 straight years.

In fact, we’ve built TWO!

And while it’s been an amazing experience, we’ve learned a LOT when it comes to running a Facebook group.

(55,000+ members will teach you a thing or two *wink*)

So we wanted to use the next, ohhhhh, few thousand words to deep-dive into the nitty gritty of starting, growing and engaging a FB Group for your brand.

Let’s get into it…

How to Start a Facebook Group

There are two ways to create a group; from your personal account or you can create a group for your Page.

One way isn’t necessarily better than the other, but when you create a group for your Business Page all future posts will be under your page name and your group will be seen as a “linked” group on your business page.

We’ll show you both ways, but start by showing you how to create a Facebook group from your personal profile.

Step One: Add Group

There are two ways to create a group through your personal profile — on your profile page or through your profile Home page.

Through Your Profile Page

Using your tab bar above your post section, select the “More” dropdown menu. From there click on “Groups”.

Through Your Homepage

The left sidebar of your Homepage has several links listed under different categories including Shortcuts, Explore and Create. You can create a page by selecting Groups under both the Explore and Create categories.

If you go through the Explore >> Groups path, you will be brought to a list of all the groups you are currently a member of.

The option to create a new group will be in the top right corner of this page.

If you go through Create >> Group, you will automatically be sent to the Create Group lightbox.

Through Your Business Page

If you are creating a Facebook group for your business page, go to your business profile Page. In the left hand sidebar select Groups.

If your sidebar does not have a Groups tab go into your Page settings, Edit Page and click Add Tab. Select the Group tab and it will now become a part of your left sidebar.

Click on the Groups tab to be brought to step two.

Step Two: Create a New Group

Whether you go through your personal profile or business page, you will be directed to the page that allows you to create your group.

And it’s only one simple click away.

Click on the “+Create Group” button.

Step Three: Give Your Group a Name

It’s time to get creative and name your group. Don’t overthink this process, but you definitely want your name to reflect the intention of your group.

For example, our Facebook group is simply “The NEW Screw the Nine to Five Community.”

Nothing fancy, but it describes exactly what we use it for — building an allegiance of like minded entrepreneurs who want to Screw the Nine to Five with us.

Easy.

Now enter your name in the light box.

Step Four: Add Members

Before you can start pimping out your new group, you will need to add at least one Facebook friend to your group.

A little backwards in my opinion, but it is what it is.

Step Five: Choose Your Privacy Setting

There are three different types of Facebook groups privacy settings — Open (available to literally anyone), Closed (searchable, but must be approved by an admin) and Secret (only members see this group).

The choice is yours, but we recommend using a Closed group.

Closed Facebook groups allow you to monitor who enters your group, while still being easy to find. They also give you access to fun new “Join Questions” which we’ll talk about later on.

Tip* We suggest checking off the “Pin to Shortcuts” button before creating so it’s easy to find in your Home page sidebar.

Once you’ve filled everything out, click Create.

Step Six: Choose a Group Icon

If you’re already a member of a Facebook group you may have noticed that in your News Feed sidebar, each group has its own icon.

Now your icon doesn’t actually mean anything, but it sure is fun to pick one out.

Facebook provides several cute little emojis/icons to choose from so customize away. If you don’t like the one you choose now, you can always go back and change it later.

If you truly aren’t interested in icons you can skip this step.

Step Seven: Get Personal — Fill Out Your Facebook Group About Section

Your Facebook group About section is essentially your group’s business card. It contains all the important deets your members will need to learn about you and what this group stands for.

This also happens to be a great spot to list out your Facebook group admin rules so they are front and center.

Here’s a peak at what ours looks like:

Step Eight: Brand the Heck Out of It

Time for the fun stuff: Branding your group!

Your group header image gives you the opportunity to splash your brand for all of FB to see, as well as tease or direct your members to specific resources.

Unlike your personal profile header image, your business group header should be more than a pretty picture.

Get wild and crazy and add a Call to Action and inspire your members to take an action.

Step Nine: Edit Group Settings

Alrighttttt, now it’s time to get into the nitty gritty of it all.

*rubs hands together excitedly*

Start by clicking on the “More” tab and select “Edit Group Settings.”

Inside the group settings page you will see several different items that you can customize to your heart’s content.

We’re talking privacy settings, membership approval, updating the group description, posting permissions and so much more.

I feel like this is the perfect opportunity to…

Show you my tipssssss!

Tip #1 – Customize Your URL

Customize your group URL and add in an email address so members can contact you directly (if you’re open to that level of access).  

Tip #2 – Only Let Admins Approve New Members

Update your membership approval to only allow admins access to approving new members.

This gives you and your admins exclusive rights to approving and denying new members.

Tip #3 – Get Crystal Clear On Your Facebook Group Rules

Write down what you’re willing to moderate so you can shape your members behaviour to serve you and your business goals with this group.

(Here’s a peek at our group rules)

For example, we don’t allow members to post video in our group because it’s too time consuming to review every video to ensure no one is self promoting or violating our member guidelines.

We also don’t allow any self-promotion, links to your own social profiles or website, affiliate links, opt-ins and freebies or branded photos outside of our promotional thread.

Some people may think that seems strict, but after 3 years of moderating free communities, to us this feels light and easy to manage.

Moral of the story?

Get clear on what you’re willing to allow and what is a no-go for your group….and then stick to it.

Tip #4 – Create “Join” Questions

Under the ‘Membership Requests’ section you can customize up to 3 Facebook Group questions that potential new members must answer if they want to be considered for your group.

This is one of our fave new ways of getting to know new members before they even step foot in our group and to collect a little market research!

Like I mentioned above, here are a few of the Join Questions we’ve used with our group:

  1. Do you agree to the rules? (a must for any group, IMO)
  2. Scale of 1 to 10 how interested are you in learning more about Screw U? (a bunch of our members inside Screw U have come from this one Q alone!)
  3. What value can you bring to this group?
  4. What is the biggest obstacle in your business right now?

Again, that last question gave us enormous insight into what our members were struggling with and gave us the inspiration to create an entirely unique training around it!

It’s called 90 Day Traffic and it’s going to rock your entrepreneurial world.

Seriously.

Tip #5 – Add Tags

Tags are essentially keywords that people can use in the Search bar to find your group. By adding applicable tags related to your business, it will make it easier for others to find your group.

In the Tags box, start typing in a word. It will automatically populate suggestions. Click on any and all that are applicable.

For example, you might want to add “online business,” “entrepreneurship,” or even your business name.

You can only add up to 5 tags though, so choose wisely.

Step Ten: Get Posting

You’ve done all the admin work, now it’s time to start posting and get that conversation rolling.

The best way to break the ice, especially in a new group, is by creating super engaging and easy to answer posts.

Which is why we are big believers in conversation sparking themed posts.

If you’ve created a post that you want your members to see every time they pop in, make it a Facebook Group pinned post.

To pin a post, simply write and publish a post. Once published, click on the three dots in the top right corner of that post. This will give you some scroll down options, one of which is “Pin Post”.

Pinned posts will automatically be “pinned” to the top of your Group’s feed until you choose to remove it, allowing more of your members to see your posts without having to worry about them getting buried in the feed.

Alright, so now that you know how to start a Facebook group, let’s jam on how to grow it.

Best of all, I’m going to show you how to do it fo’ free without having to throw down on Facebook ads.

Ready?

You’ve got your group set up, now it’s time to promote the heck out of it in order to get more Facebook group members.

But how do you get the word out there?

After all, if no one knows about your group, how the heck is it going to grow?

Fortunately we have a metric tonne of ideas (both free and paid!) to grow your group, without requiring too much time on your end.

How To Promote Your Facebook Group For Free

On a shoestring budget or simply looking to leverage some free promo?

Over the years we have come up with several crafty and 100% free ways to promote our group.

The best part is you can start using these strategies RIGHT NOW if you have your group set up.

Let’s break a few of these down…

Your Website Navigation Menu

If you have a website (and I’m guessing you do!) then one of the hottest pieces of real estate you have is your nav bar at the top of your website.

Why do we love this strategy?

Because your navigation bar is the first place people will look when hunting down more deets on you and your business.

So why not use it to send traffic to your Facebook group?

We had our group linked on our nav bar for over 2.5 years and it was a wildly effective way to move people from our site into our group with one click of a mouse.

Now, because there is limited space in your nav menu keep things short and sweet and simply create a button that says “Free FB Group” or simply “FB Group”.

From there you simply redirect them to your Facebook Group join page.

Simple and easy.

Just how we like it.

Not sure how to create a redirect to move people from your site to your group?

Now if you’re wary about sending traffic away from your website, don’t sweat.

By sending your website traffic through to your Facebook Group you are still sending them to a space you moderate and can engage with them.

More so, you are inviting them into a private community where they can engage, connect, learn and grow with you—allowing you to build that coveted Know, Like and Trust factor (the KLT as we like to call it) making it easier for you to upgrade them from a free member into a paying customer.

Another option?

Your Thank You Pages

Thank You Pages are one of the easiest ways to get more group members for free and are stupid-easy to set up using a tool like LeadPages or ClickFunnels.

Just think about how many Thank You Pages you likely have!

From lead magnets to sales funnels to free challenges to webinars, if you’re building an email list, chances are you have at LEAST one Thank You Page you can use to strategically move people into your group!

Think about it this way…

People need something to do after they opt in for a freebie!

You can give them that clear Call to Action with something as breezy as “Thanks for signing up. Come join us in our Free Facebook Group and let’s get to know each other better!”

Boom.

Yet another automated way to grow your group without constantly having to ping people directly!

What’s more is offering these ‘next steps’ or ways to connect with you on a deeper level gives direction to those who have already shown an interest in your business, allowing you to elevate that relationship into a paying customer faster.

Your Email List

Emails are a fantastic place to subtly drop your FB Group link.

Here’s how we do this…

Each time someone signs up to our email list, we send them a welcome email (we call it an Indoctrination Email) that gives them the link to download whatever freebie they signed up for PLUS gives them some background on who Josh and I are, what they can expect with The Screw and a few “next steps” they can take to connect with us more.

Joining our FB group is the second step we prompt them to take and it works like a charm!

Wanna double down on your email game?

Use the P.S in any of your broadcasts to prompt people to join your group who may not already be in there.

Hell, you can even incentivize them more by highlighting a popular thread or conversation that is already happening in the group and invite them to chime in with their thoughts!

I see some of the most successful Facebook groups doing this and it works like a charm!

Your Personal Profile and Featured Photos

Perhaps one of the craftiest strategies I have seen for promoting a Facebook group is by using your personal profile page’s cover photo and feature photos section.

Now, I don’t do this myself because I rarely use my personal account for business purposes, but I’ve seen others do it and think it’s incredibly smart.

To be clear, this is on your personal profile page, NOT your business page.

Here’s how you do this:

Using a tool like PicMonkey or Canva, create an eye-catching cover photo with a quick description on what your group is all about and who it’s for with a clear CTA to “click the pic to join the group”.

Kinda like how Jessica Stansberry does in her profile cover photo for her group Rising Video Rockstars

From there you simply add the link to the photo description so when people click on the photo, they can easily join the group in one quick click.

You can see this in action once you click into Jessica’s photo…

And when I asked her why she chooses to use her personal profile to promote her group, this is what she said:

“Growing a Facebook group (or online business, in general) can feel like you’re standing in the middle of the street screaming at people with nobody listening, but I have found that if I have my personal profile optimized in a way that attracts people to my group, and my business as a whole, it doesn’t feel as difficult.

As a video marketing strategist, I tend to get tagged in other Facebook groups and conversations online about YouTube, equipment, live strategy, etc so my name is instantly associated with the topic – BUT – if I just left it at that, someone would have to click on my name, scroll through my personal profile and find my business page, then go to my website before ever finding MY group.

So, with the strategy I use of “pimping out” my personal profile, it takes a simple click (or even hover) on my name once I’m tagged or I comment for someone to see that I have a Facebook group that they want to join, and we all know that the less clicks someone has to execute to land where they should be, the better.”

Then once you click into the photo, here is what you see…

Not only does this help Jaya use her personal profile strategically, but similar to Jessica it helps direct people from other groups (or FB in general) towards her group without her constantly having to promote it.

Ahhhh leverage. You sexy.

Try using your “featured photos”!

What the heck are “featured photos”?

It’s a section on your personal profile where you can feature up to 5 photos that tell a story about you and your business.

I’ve even seen people get super creative and create one large image that promotes something for their business.

Now, I bet I can guess what you’re thinking right now…

“Jill how does this attract new members if the only people seeing it are my current Facebook friends?”

So glad you asked!

You see, if you are active in other groups that are relevant to your business (and you should be!) and you’re showing up in a helpful, value-driven way, people are inevitably going to click on your personal profile to learn more about you.

It’s classic Facebook Stalking 101.

Which means if you can trick out your profile using the different pieces of real estate you have, ie. your cover photo, your featured photos and even your bio (where you can add links) you are increasing your chances of new members joining your group…fo’ free!

Oh, and I’m not done yet…

Your Social Media Bio Links

Another dead-easy way to get more members into your facebook group is to start by using any and all social media profiles you have.

Login to your Instagram, Pinterest or Twitter account, for example. On each of these platforms you have the opportunity to add one link to your profile.

Most people opt to use this link to send viewers to their website or an email opt-in (which is super smart, btw), however you can also use these links to direct your followers to your group.

Stealthy, right?

This can be done on literally any social platform that adds a link. Here’s what our Instagram link looks like:

Should you be using a big ol’ clunky Facebook link though?

Hellllll no.

Instead, I want you to use…

Custom Domain Names

This is one of my favorite organic growth hacks as it’s so simple to set up and works like a charm!

Why?

Because saying “Join us at ScrewCommunity.com” is so much easier than “Join us over at  https://www.facebook.com/groups/473976206268263/”!

And yes, while technically this tip isn’t free (because you have to buy a domain name), it’s wildly beneficial to your efforts AND domain names are incredibly cheap!

We use NameCheap.com for all our domain names and absolutely love the company.

Facebook Lives

We are suckers for Facebook Live!

These livestreaming broadcasts give you the power to interact live with your followers and build a loyal relationship with them.

They also allow you to take your viewers behind the scenes with you, give them loads of free value-driven content and engage in real time with them!

What’s more is you can use your FB Lives to drive viewers to your Facebook group throughout your broadcast to continue the conversation inside your free community.

Again, this is where having a custom domain for your group is wildly helpful!

Your Featured Posts or Interviews

This pretty much gets summed up by these 4 words:

Pimp. your. group. EVERYWHERE!

Seriously.

Now, in case it’s not obvious, we are BIG believers in the power of building organic attention to your brand.

Why?

Because not only does it save you a ton of cash in the beginning, but it’s paramount to the longevity of your business.

So how do you do this?

Well, Josh has a whoollllleeee Free Traffic Workshop he runs (that will up your traffic game in ways you can’t imagine), but simply put it breaks down to this…

You gotta put in the work.

Plain and simple.

That means guest posting, doing podcast interviews, showing up in relevant Facebook groups, doing FB Lives with those who have audiences you want to get in front of and doing interviews on other people’s webshows!

And yes, I know it sounds like a lot of work.

But you know what else it is?

Dangerously effective in helping you get your business in front of those who are perfectly aligned with what you have to say and sell.

What’s more is in each interview or feature you do, you’re likely going to be given a chance to tell people where they can connect with you…

This is where you pimp your group with that sexy custom domain you just set up and funnel people from that interview into your group where they can connect and engage with you.

I do this on every. single. interview I do and have had thousands (and thousands) of people join my group as a result of doing this.

Trust me, it works.

What about trying out a good ol’…

Facebook Group Takeover

Sounds pretty rad, right?

Here’s how they work…

Chances are you’re a member of other Facebook groups related to your interests and of course, business niche.

Which means you’re likely showing up in those groups, providing mad value and positioning yourself as a go-to in your space.

And if you’re doing it right (ie. never trying to skirt the rules and always giving more than you take), the FB group owner is going to take notice.

From there, you can start to build a relationship with that group owner and suggest trading Group Takeovers!

So how do they work?

Essentially, you each create an introduction for the person doing the takeover (so your group members aren’t confused) and explain what the members can expect to gain from this person’s posts over the coming few days.

Then each day the guest either creates a high-impact, value-driven post that teaches something or does a FB Live in your group teaching your members something actionable.

You can even cap it all off with a live joint Q & A session for your members that not only rocks their world, but again, positions your guest as a go-to in their niche.

Then you just simply repeat the process in their group!

Not only is it engaging, but it’s highly valuable for your members.

Shazam!

Of course, if you’re craving some accelerated growth for your group you do have the option to run FB ads to it.

Kinda.

Allow me to explain…

Using Facebook Ads To Grow Your Group

Now, here’s the thing…

I’m gonna say something that is likely going to get some readers a tad fired up.

*deep breath*

I loathe the idea of running Facebook ads to promote your group.

Why?

Because you can’t directly measure the return on your investment.

Why not?

Because if you execute on even 2 or 3 of the tips I mentioned above, your group will organically grow without you having to spend a dime.

Which means you won’t be able to tell who is joining from your ad and who is joining from your organic efforts.

What’s more is when you run Facebook ads for groups, it’s damn near impossible to know which members who convert into paying customers have come from your ads…without you directly asking them.

And to me, the fact that you can’t measure that ROI makes running ads to grow your group a less than savvy spend of money.

Instead, if you are hell-bent on running ads to speed up the process, run them to a lead magnet and use your Thank You Page and Indoctrination Email (tips we covered a few lines up) to get your new subscribers into your group.

This allows you to track your ad spend, your ROI annnnd it helps you build and grow an asset you actually own, ie. your email list!

Because, trust me, the last thing you want to do is focus all of your efforts on building your brand on rented land.

Harsh, but true.

Alright, so now that you know how to grow that group of yours, let’s talk about how to engage that bad boy so you’re not sitting there with a group full of lurkers.

How To Engage Your Facebook Group Members

Here’s the thing: If you’re a smart and strategic entrepreneur, you aren’t creating a Facebook Group just for the hell of it.

Ohhhhh no.

Instead, you are creating it to serve a purpose.

To connect members of your community.

To help them expand.

To make them feel seen, heard and acknowledged.

To give them a place to belong.

To build your brand awareness.

To create a cozy Facebook Group marketing channel for your business that doesn’t feel like a marketing channel.

And of course, to propel your business forward, faster.

Which means you’re going to be marketing inside your community.

*gasp*

I know. The idea of “marketing” is something a lot of entrepreneurs have a love/hate relationship with.

Why?

Because a powerful marketing strategy is like a budding new relationship.

It requires courting, and thoughtfulness.

And time.

Like any good relationship, you gotta kick things off on the right foot.

You gotta romance them.

Make them feel important and cherished.

Provide them with a safe harbour to grow.

*swoon*

And yes, ideally you wanna bring it all home with a sweet, sweet sale or two…or ten.

Now if you’re thinking “but I don’t want to piss off my members”, hear me out…

The key to marketing and selling inside your Facebook Group is finding the right balance between nurturing your community and marketing your business.

There’s a very fine line between indulgent self-promo and effective marketing.

Especially when you’re trying to facilitate an engaged community.

Fortunately, it’s totally possible to do this in a way that doesn’t feel pushy, salesy or desperate.

Let’s jam on 3 of our tried and true marketing strategies for your Facebook group.

Facebook Live in Groups

I can’t say it enough…

Facebook Live is one of the easiest ways to authentically connect with your members in real time.

Meaning it’s the perfect platform for warming things up before revving that marketing engine.

Facebook Lives are a great place to start if you want to dish out high-impact content that builds trust and rocks your members’ worlds.

Best of all there are several marketing strategies you can test out.

Here’s a few off the top of my head…

Strategy #1 — Weekly Live Broadcast

If you’re wanting to make Facebook Live a big part of your engagement and marketing strategy, there is no better way to do this than through a broadcast done on the same day and time each week.

Josh and I did this back in 2017 and found it to be wildly effective for not only drumming up engagement, but for leading members into our funnels from our FB Lives.

(More on that coming up!)

What’s more is we actually hosted our Lives on our Page and shared them into our Group, allowing us to add each and every group member who watched our Live video (for more than 3 seconds) to our “video views” FB ad audience—something that can only be done (as of now) from a FB Page.

From there, we would then retarget anyone who watched our FB Live with whatever freebie we had for that broadcast, ultimately building our email list in an engaging and high-value way.

Know what else we used these weekly live broadcasts for?

How?

By subtly mentioning them throughout our broadcasts.

For example, if we’re jamming on “how to grow your own Facebook group” we would mention our Facebook Groups training, Create Awesome FB Groups because it’s relevant to the topic we were talking about.

And without fail, after each broadcast not only would our list grow but we would always pick up a few sales!

Best of all, it never felt salesy and it never pissed off any members.

Score!

Strategy #2 — Partner Up and Promote Another Entrepreneur  

One of our faaavvvourite forms of revenue in any business we’ve ever run is affiliate revenue.

Why?

Because it’s high leverage and there is little to no fulfillment or customer support on your end.

Now, it may feel counterintuitive to be using Facebook Groups promote another business’ product, program or service when you’re trying to sell your own stuff, but affiliate promotions are mutually beneficial.

How?

Because let’s face it: There are going to be needs your audience has that you either cannot meet or don’t want to cater to.

By promoting someone else’s offer to your community, it allows you to serve that need AND get paid a commission in the process!

Win!

Plus, it allows you to build strategic partnerships and relationships with other influencers in your space!

We’ve done this with promotions for Stu McLaren’s Tribe course, James Wedmore’s Business By Design program and a webinar program—all of which included FB Live Q & A sessions streamed into my group that generated over $324,000 between only 3 promotions.

Just make sure you don’t just  align yourself with any ol’ sponsor or affiliate because they’re paying cash.

Instead, only promote the people and products you either personally use or believe in.

Otherwise you can start to chip away at your credibility.

And really, no one wants that.

Strategy #3 — Host Exclusive Workshops or Trainings

Now, this marketing strategy can be potent if your business offers any kind of training or coaching.

Think about it…

One of the greatest appeals for joining a business membership group or a coaching program is to get exclusive insights, results-driven training or access to the facilitator or coach.

Well, thanks to FB Live, you can now mimic this process without having to invest in an external livestreaming platform like Zoom, GoTo Webinar or any other webinar software to deliver your training live to your members.

Instead, you can go live with your members inside your group, share your screen, talk them through your content and answer their questions in real time.

From there you can pin the replay to the top of your group, send an email to anyone who may have missed the broadcast (with a link to the replay) and even keep a running list of the different lives you’ve done (with titles, descriptions and timestamps if you’re feeling extra daring) using the “Files” function inside your group.

Now, while this is a low-bandwidth and easy way to run any kind of group program, I haaaaave to call out the elephant in the room and mention the risk…

What is it?

That at any time Facebook can change the rules without warning.

So always use your best judgement when it comes to any paid offerings you may be housing inside a Facebook group.

Facebook Group Funnels

Hands down this is one of the most deadly-effective Facebook group marketing strategies we rely on for selling inside our group without our members feeling sold to in the slightest.

Now I break down this entire process in waaaaaaay more nitty gritty detail over in this post, but here is the basic gist of how we use Facebook Group marketing and sales funnels inside our group.

Step 1: Run a Poll

Honestly, this is always our starting point each and every time we go to create a new funnel in our business.

And we do it for 2 reasons:

The first being it builds mad engagement (as we’ve already discussed in the previous chapter) and the second is it allows us to pinpoint exactly what our members want to learn about.

Which means we get to kiss the guesswork buh-bye and only create what people want.

Here’s an example of a poll I ran a couple months back that provided huuuuuge insight for us!

Why?

Because we were expecting an entirely different result!

Ahhhhh market research, I love you!

Once our poll has run for a few days, we then move onto the next step.

What is it?

Step 2: Create Your Read Magnet

“Wait. What the eff is a read magnet?” is what I assume you just said in your head.

And I get it.

Most people expect funnels to play out like this:

Lead magnet > pitch > followup sequence > urgency and pitch > nurture

But not our funnels.

Instead, we kick things off with some high-impact free content.

This post you’re reading right now is an example of one in action.

As is this post.

And this post.

And this post.

The point is we frontload our funnels with free content that is hyper-specific to the topic people just voted on.

From there, we dive into creating our next step lead magnet.

But not just any lead magnet…

Step 3: Create a Congruent Lead Magnet

Yep. It’s all about keeping it congruent with this strategy.

And here’s what I mean by that….

Since we’re creating topic-specific sales funnels, we want to make the next step (a.k.a. signing up for our lead magnet) as much of a no-brainer as possible.

That means your lead magnet needs to be hyper-relevant to the topic of the post they just read.

So, using our sales funnel on sales funnels you can see that my Read Magnet is all about creating a dangerously-effective sales funnel and my lead magnet is the chance to “steal my emails” that we use inside our sales funnels.

Why did we choose this as our lead magnet?

Because we kept hearing from people that they didn’t know what to say in their emails to get the sale.

And since we do, it was a no-brainer offer.

Do you see how there is no disruption to the flow between the read magnet and the lead magnet?

It all makes sense. It all flows.

So not only are we serving our members with actionable content, but we’re building our list and gearing up to turn our free group members into paying customers.

How?

Step 4: Create a Value-Driven One-Time Offer

This is where you get the chance to cash in on the good will you’ve built inside your group and use it to convert free members into paying customers.

Here’s how we do it.

Again, using the sales funnel post as an example, if you were to sign up for that lead magnet you would see that once you submit your details you are brought to a page that looks like another blogpost.

Because it basically is.

What I mean is, we use that page to give even more high-impact content to our now subscriber and teach them yet another tip that is relevant to the topic of that funnel.

In the case of that sales funnel post, it’s a blogpost around the power of creating genuine scarcity inside automated funnels.

What’s more is the blogpost segues seamlessly into a pitch for our program, Perfect Sales Funnel that we offer at a discount for 20 minutes.

Why?

Because we love action-takers and we want to reward those who make a decision to buy right then and there.

If they don’t, totally cool.

We simply follow up with a select few emails and give them another chance to purchase, but at a higher price.

If they still don’t buy, totally cool.

We move them into our “nurture list” where they will receive weekly content, free training and any insights we may share.

Now does eeevvveeerrrryyyyone love this approach?

No.

But it works for us and it converts and it allows us to elevate the relationship with our free members to paying customers, get them results and build customer loyalty.

And to us, that’s a massive win!

Facebook Ads for Groups

Alright, there is one final marketing strategy you can use if you’re building a Facebook group for business and that, my friends, is Facebook ads.

Now, at the time of me writing this (June 2018), you can’t actually run ads to your group members….yet.

However, here is a handy workaround we have used to be able to target our group members with ads…

Actually, I have two.

  1. Sharing videos from your Facebook business page into your group
  2. Sending your group members to a pixelled landing page

Allow me to break ‘em down.

As I mentioned a few hundred lines up in the section on Facebook Lives, one of the easiest ways to be able to target your group members with Facebook ads is to either record a video, upload it to your page and share it into your group…

Or go live on your Facebook Page and share the stream into your group.

Here’s why it works:

If any of your group members watches a video from your Page for more than 3 seconds, they will automatically be added into your “video views” audience which you can use to target with Facebook ads.

We’ve done this soooo many times and each time it works.

The second way?

Send your group members to a landing page in order to get something.

I did this back in late 2017 for a bootcamp we were running called In The Black Bootcamp and in the lead up to my pre-launch promotion I decided to open up a “pop up group” which would be free to join for a month before the bootcamp kicked off.

Inside that group I hosted masterclasses, group-only Q & As and had a whole bunch of conversation sparking posts lined up that had members taking action on specific tasks in their business.

However, in order to join the group, they had to hit a landing page which had the link to the pop up group as well as info on what to expect for each of the free masterclasses and group-only Q & A sessions.

It worked beautifully and allowed me to add a few thousand people to our ad audience with a few simple posts and videos to our main free group.

Now do you have to run a pop up group to be able to do this?

Helllll no.

Instead, it could be any kind of freebie!

A checklist.

A webinar.

A free video series.

An ebook.

A simple download.

A free meetup.

A chance to sign up for a free call with you.

Whatever your heart desires!

The key is simply creating a page people can go to in order to get something of high value for free.

Oh, and making sure you have your pixel placed on that page!

That’s kind of a big deal.
