A Lesson From A League of Their Own

by David Garland in General

Happy whatever-day-it-is (I can’t keep track now that we have two tiny humans in our home).

Anyway…over the past few months I’ve been able to watch some favorite movies at because my wife would go to bed super early (young children = go to bed early).

A couple weeks ago I was watching one of my favorite baseball movies: A League Of Their Own.

In one memorable scene, Dottie Hinson (played by Geena Davis) tries to quit the team telling the manager Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) that “it just got too hard.”

Dugan replies: “It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it. The hard… is what makes it great.”

It made me think…this is exactly the same thing with your business.

Don’t let anyone tell you that selling your expertise isn’t hard. It is.

Don’t let anyone telling you that building an audience isn’t hard. It is.

Don’t let anyone tell you that creating a successful online course isn’t hard. It is.

BUT on the other side of that challenge? The other side of that difficulty?

That’s where the rewards live. And those that battle through the challenges get to reap those rewards.

What kinds of rewards? Too many to name but a few key ones…

-The satisfaction and happiness of seeing your customer’s get results.
-The ability to work from anywhere, on your own time, with your rules.
-Of course the financial awards that come with a successful business (and whatever those mean for you whether it is knowing you don’t have to worry about money for your family and/or the ability to make big time contributions to charities/causes of your choice or hey even if you just want to buy yourself a nice present 😉

All of those “rewards” though aren’t given. They are earned. And it is hard. And it is worth it.

So next time you want to quit when facing your first, second, 50th, 100th or 1,000th challenge just remember what that rascal Jimmy Dugan said: It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it. The hard… is what makes it great.”

Now go out there and there and be great (and don’t worry about stumbling along the way),
