The election is over, the results are in, and we have a new President-elect here in the United States. Whether you are pumped up or disappointed with the results, there are some fundamental things we can all learn from this election that will help you build your business.

Trust me this is not a political article but instead a glimpse into the movement that Barack Obama created on the Internet. Regardless of your political views, you have to appreciate President-elect Obama’s effectiveness of online campaigning.

These political campaigns rack up billions in fundraising and spend absurd amounts branding and marketing their candidate. From 30-minute informercials to attack ads to annoying direct mail pieces. All of the above costs some SERIOUS dough.

But in my opinion, it was a FREE resource that really helped empower, motivate, and even create a pride in (especially) younger voters and that is social networking tools.

Obama’s campaign on Facebook was brilliant. There were massive Barack Obama groups (1,000,000+ in some singular groups), events, videos, and more all OVER Facebook (of course John McCain did so as well, but he was WAY behind the 8-ball in terms speed and creativity).

Then the Obama faithful delivered the ultimate only knockout punch and that was having people “donate” their status to Barack Obama. For those very few who are not familiar with Facebook, each person on Facebook can update in a line or two what they are up to at that very moment. For example, mine might say “David is updating his blog and it will be super awesome.” When people “donated” their status to Obama, it showed up something like this “Kristin is the 543,000 person to donate her status to Barack Obama” and then the program would change it every so often, for example “Krisitin donated her status to Barack Obama. Go out and vote now!”

Now, this may be a simple little thing; however, it caught on like wildfire. Hundreds of thousands of people donated their status over a 48-hour period causing a Tipping-Point-like epidemic of a wave of Obama supporters taking over Facebook.

What can we learn from this? The bottom line is that social networking tools can be YOUR best business friend. They are free, simple to use, and super effective. Getting your brand into social networking sites isn’t optional, you MUST do it for success. Free marketing? Those words very rarely go together.

Go out and maximize yourself today on the Internet. Obama did it and I bet you can too.
