(Note: Off to Chicago this weekend to celebrate my fiancee’s birthday and take in a little Cardinals vs. Cubs…go Cards! Have a great holiday weekend. Back on Tuesday with a BRAND SPANKIN’ NEW INTERVIEW with the CEO of Zappos Tony Hsieh).

Anytime a conversation comes up with multiple people, it becomes time to REALLY pay attention. Over the past 24-hours the topic of “How To” has come up with three very different people in three very different contexts all (pretty much) discussing these set of questions:

-Is there map or blueprint to be a successful entrepreneur?

-Is there a step-by-step guide to building an incredible business?

-Do people want simply the recipe? And if the recipe “did” exist, wouldn’t it just make it too easy? Not creative? Not challenging? Anyone could do it?

And these were three conversations with three very different people:

1. With my personal trainer Matt Brown (who has a cool side business launching called The Mindset Project worth taking a look at)

2. With the CEO of Zappos Tony Hsieh (interview on Monday!)

3. With the founder of CoachRadio.TV Justin Lukasavige (his interview is coming soon and actually he posted about this very subject yesterday).

Seth Godin talks about it often when he gives examples and tells stories (his and other people’s): “Your mileage may vary.”

Because everyone is different. Your business is different than my business. And your business is different than Tony’s, Matt’s, Justin’s and Seth’s.

If your business is the SAME, than perhaps your personality is different. Or your background is different. Or you prefer working from home. Or in a big office. Or with lots of employees. Or with zero employees. Maybe you are a people person. Or a not-so-much a people person. Maybe you love to write. Or create video. Or sit in silence. Maybe you like work long hours and on weekends. Maybe not.

After over 150 interviews in 3 years (and many more to come) I can conclusively say that a road map doesn’t exist. It isn’t a clear path. It isn’t paint-by-the-numbers. It isn’t some magic pill you swallow. It isn’t like personal training where essentially (with a few variables) there is a recipe that works.

And if there was a how-to guide, I bet none of us would actually implement it. Why? Because THAT is why we ARE entrepreneurs. To do things differently. Change the world. Control our own destiny. Go our own way.

But, yes we entrepreneurs do learn. But this isn’t like school, is it? Perhaps you learn from…

1. Inspiration & Stories: An inspiring or WOW story from someone that is successful and unique. Something that gets you fired up like a Gary Vaynerchuk keynote. Their stories inspire action from you. And they make you feel warm and fuzzy.

2. Delicious Nuggets: Takeaways and ideas. Small and big. Little things that can give you an edge or think about something a little different.

3. Education: Learning something new. A new skill. Discovering a new website or a great new product. Something that nudges you in the right direction or solves a problem you are having.


Which begs the question: As an entrepreneur, how do you like learning? What sparks you? What gets you going? What turns you off?
