(Fun fact: This presentation is from May’s RISE Lunch. There were two other great presentations by Jason Bahnak of Gateway Business Development (Disclosure: Gateway is a RISE partner) and Patti Harty from Stark & Associates going live soon).

Here is the premise of the talk:

When it comes to online marketing & promoting, there are really two approaches:

1. Dumber, slower, expensive.

2. Smarter, faster, cheaper.

The dumber, slower, expensive approach involves two things:

1. A lot of traditional ads online (banners, etc.) bragging about how amazing your product or service is.

2. A complete focus (on Twitter, Facebook, etc.) on your product. Telling people to buy, buy, buy.

One problem with this approach is it doesn’t build trust or likability. In fact, it can be downright annoying and turn people off from the product and you (not that YOU would do this of course, but I’m sure you know someone who might). Second, outspending the competition through traditional ads is a losing battle. Not only is it expensive, but it isn’t sharable or spreadable. When is the last time you shared a banner ad with someone?

The smarter, faster, cheaper approach:

So, what is a better way to approach your online marketing, promoting and advertising (advertising is certainly not dead…in fact, there are incredible innovative opportunities now that go way beyond a 30-second ad).

1. Becoming a trusted resource as opposed to a product pusher.

2. Creating, DJing and/or sponsoring content that is entertaining, inspiring & educational (and perhaps all three).

Why? Because, when you break it down, the Internet is really made up three things: Products, People and Porn Content. The more you can entertain, educate and inspire…the more success you will have. Enjoy!

What are your thoughts? What are jerky and non-jerky ways to promote online?

Johnny Londoff Chevrolet: You know the deal. Just mention RISE when you walk in, call in or click in and you get supplier pricing. No haggling (and you don’t need to just be in St. Louis for this deal).

Abstrakt Marketing: When you are looking for trusted outsource CMO (that is fancy lingo for Chief Marketing Officer), Abstrakt is the best solution? Why? Simple. They understand the online AND offline marketing/advertising world. They are far more than a one-trick pony (and they will do a free marketing assessment for you).

MB Consulting Group: You know what sucks? Dealing with all the geeky stuff: Computer crashes, data backups, yuck. Instead of hiring the kid in the ripped jeans to “hopefully” figure it out, check out MB Consulting Group to handle it for you. They will handle your IT like their very own precious baby (that sounded less weird in my head).
