Dominating Your Local MarketNowadays, there is a tendency for entrepreneurs to go worldwide right away. And why wouldn’t you? There are online tools to reach folks all over the world with a single click of the mouse or tap on the touchscreen.

But, have you overlooked the local opportunity? A chance to dominate in your own home town? Become a hometown household name?

Last year, when Gary Vaynerchuk was in St. Louis promoting his book Crush It!, we had a chat. I hadn’t seen him since I’d interviewed him on RISE at Wine Library in New Jersey many months before.

He grabbed me by the collar (sort of) and said, “David, next year when I come back here I want you to make sure EVERYONE in St. Louis knows you are.”

Hmmm….why did Gary say that? I mean, we are talking about “the” worldwide wine aficionado and social media sommelier.

Simple. The local opportunity is overlooked. The opportunity to be known in your market. Local customers. Local clients. Local media coverage. Local advertising. Local sponsorships. Being the local trusted resource (“expert”) on a particular subject. An elephant in a playhouse designed for puppies.

Regardless of your business model, there are benefits of being locally known and you can leverage the opportunities for bigger things if you so choose.

Here are some ideas from blood, sweat, and experience:

  • Throw a local event. A tweetup, meetup, Facebookup, whatever, and bring likeminded people together for coffee or drinks.
  • Position yourself as a speaker in your town. Reach out to the Chamber of Commerce and networking groups to see if you can come in. Maybe you won’t be paid (or maybe you will), but it will be great practice, a relationship builder, and a networking opportunity (bonus: no travel!).
  • Contact local media sources looking for content. Perhaps a magazine, a TV show (this is what I did with Great Day St. Louis, where I contribute periodically) newspaper, blog, whatever. Can you be a pundit or columnist on a particular subject related to your business or business in general?
  • Local ad markets are ripe and rising. Why? Because they are niche. If you are a blogger or online media source, you can market to your local community and perhaps monetize it through local advertising.
  • …and many more.

What are your thoughts? What are some other ways to dominate locally? Are you ready to become the elephant in your local room?

Some goodies to check out:

Kevin Miller, a guest on RISE this week, had me on his show a couple of weeks ago (which you can check out right here) and he really dug into this subject with me about how to become locally known.

Chris Brogan had a great post yesterday about the local opportunity right here.
