Have you seen the movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall?

If you haven’t, check it out. Freakin’ hilarious. It is one of the those movies I’ve probably seen 40 times because anytime I’m on the couch flipping around and I see it on…I have to watch it for at least a few minutes.

Anyway…one really funny scene is when the main character, Peter (Jason Segal), is taking surf lessons from Paul Rudd’s character.

They are practicing on dry land and he tells Peter to hop up on the board. He hops up.

Paul Rudd: “No that’s not it at all…do less.

Peter tries it again doing a little less.

Paul Rudd: “Do less.

Peter tries it AGAIN doing a little less.

Paul Rudd: “Do less.

This literally goes on for a few hilarious moments until Peter ends up doing literally laying on the board not moving.

What the heck does this have to do with online courses and your business?

This exact scene is, in a nutshell, exactly how I grew my business from 0 to-5-figures, 5-figures to 6-figures, 6-figures to multiple-6-figures, multiple-6-figures to 7-figures and 7-figures to multiple-7-figures in the past few years.

By doing less. Not more.

Focusing on very few things. And doing these few things extremely well and over and over again.

Most people think you need 247 marketing strategies to grow your business and 63 products to make the bling bling. It’s just not true.

I recently had someone come to me who is really struggling with her business & driving herself looney (“I have no time to even shower!”). Yikes! That’s no fun.

A lightning quick dissection and I could see the problem: She had TOO many products. Somewhere around 9 products. Each product took up a fair amount of time & energy but 1 product was responsible for 82% of her revenue!

Now lets’ think about marketing and promoting for a second. What is easier and makes the most sense? Doing more and promoting all 9 products. Or…doing less and focusing 100% of the marketing efforts on the 82% product.

You guessed it (in case you guessed wrong…the answer is LESS…lol). Now she is focusing SOLELY ON THAT FLAGSHIP COURSE for the next year. From there *maybe* she will start to look at other ways to serve her audience/customers with an additional product.

She will be doing less…and making more 🙂

Another gentleman I had a chat with a few weeks ago was stuck in “do more” marketing.

He was doing everything or at least sort of half-assed trying everything: Facebook ads, JV webinars, solo webinars, automated webinars, YouTube ads, was writing a book, was reaching out to bloggers to do guest posting, was trying to be interviewed on podcasts, the list went on and on (I think I blacked out after the first ten).

I half-expected him to tell me his next strategy was to stand on top of a building and send out smoke signals.

My advice? You guessed it…do LESS. Pick 1-2 strategies to MASTER and OBSESS on over the next 6 months. Measure it. And then go from there.

Not only could I literally feel the weight lifted off his shoulders (you mean I don’t have to market my course in 489 different ways?!) but I can GUARANTEE you he is going to get big time results.

He will be doing less and growing more.

Bottom line: Think less. Stay focused. Do the work. And the results will be MORE.
